Back to School Money-Saving Tips

  • Spread Out the Shopping: To save the most money, you won’t want to get everything done in one trip.  Head in to either Walmart/Target with a price match plan or to the office supply stores to grab each weeks top deals.
  • Start Early: Back to school sales start as early as mid-July. In general you can guess what your kiddos need and you’ll probably be 95% spot on.  What did you use when you were 6?  Crayons, Pencils, Markers…Starting before you have the “official” list may seem dangerous.  If you end up grabbing an extra pack of pencils at 10¢ a pack it’s not nearly as bad as paying $2 for 1 pack the night before. And there is no harm in stockipiling extra supplies either!
  • Make Your Own List: Go ahead and make a list of what you think they can use.  On your list make sure to include some necessary items to help outside of school too.  Think of it as the school and homework supplies list.
  • Shop Around or Price Match: You will find the best school supply deals @ Target, Walmart, Staples, Office Max and Office Depot.  They run the best deals but, have the smallest supply.  If the products are national brands i.e. Crayola crayons and not Staples crayons then you can get those 25¢ crayons at Walmart or Target.  Both stores will price match any local competitor for any identical product!  Keep in mind they will still enforce any limits that were in the original stores ad.
  • Don’t Forget Coupons:  Be sure to keep an eye online and in the Sunday paper for coupons on back to school items. Crayola offers printable coupons, BIC Paper Mate and Sharpie will put coupons in the Sunday papers and some online to print. You’ll also see store coupons off total purchases or specific items.  Right now Target has a number of Target Cartwheel offers out for Sharpie, BIC and more.  If you use the cartwheel app on your phone you can scan the barcode of items in your cart to check and see if there are any coupons available (super easy and fun for the kids to help with).
  • Quality Is Worth It: A higher quality back pack, lunch box and even binders are a good investment.  My son tends to be tough on his backpacks and he is now in middle school and I invested in an even better backpack for him.
  • Tax Savings Shopping: If your state has tax free shopping days, then take advantage of them for larger purchases.  The savings are not worth it on the little tiny items you are buying over the next few weeks, but for backpacks, uniforms, graphing calculators etc. this can be a nice savings.  The stores also go big over these special weekends with good sales and store coupons.
  • Think Used For Some Items: Check out ebay for used items- calculators, clothing, e-readers, uniforms, etc.

Help Teachers With School Supplies #ClearTheList

Just choose a teacher in need, click on their wish list and start shopping!

Teachers and educational professionals can head over to Amazon, create a classroom wish list and then share their lists publicly. Even better, anyone can ‘donate’ items that are on the list and after making a donation, donors can even leave a note or message letting the teacher know how much they are appreciated. So awesome!

Teachers, follow these steps to make your own classroom wish list on Amazon:

  • Head over over to Amazon and hover over Account & List at the top of any Amazon.compage. Select ‘Create a List’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose the Wish list and whether you want the list to be private or public. You can also designate whether your list is for an organization and if so, you’ll have the option to provide the website address of the organization.
  • Click ‘Save’ and then you can start adding items to your list!
  • To add items to your wish list, simply browse Amazon for products and then click ‘Add to List’ under the Buy box on the right-hand side of any item’s product detail page.
  • Only list owners can make changes through Manage List. Both list owners and collaborators will be able to add and remove items.

Back to School Health Tips

Back to school means back to colds and flu. Start planning now how to avoid those nasty bugs!

1.       Think ahead about packing healthy lunches. Sometimes it’s easier to grab a pre-packed lunch at the store, but some of them have preservatives and aren’t very healthy.

2.       Sniffling and sneezing going on in your home? Have your child tested for allergies. In my family, allergies are common, so my son Cam had allergy testing in preschool. We know now what to avoid, like pet dander, etc.

3.       Teach children proper hand-washing techniques. And to use hand sanitizer if regular hand-washing isn't convenient.

4.       Breakfast doesn’t have to be boring! It's easy to stock up on your fave fruits and veggies and blend a delicious breakfast.

5.       Get enough sleep! Lack of sleep can lead to getting sick more easily.

6.       Stay hydrated! Grabbing a can of soda or a juice box can be easier, but water is the ultimate source of hydration.

7.       Make fruits and veggies fun. Every fall, we like to go out to our local orchard and pick apples. This is a fun outing for my son because he gets to pick the fruit himself and then enjoy it later.

8.       Help cut down on colds going around school, by teaching kids to sneeze into their elbow.

9.    Make a get well kit, with all your family's favorite meds for cough and colds. No last minute trips to the drug store! Here is what I would include in that kit:

GET WELL/ FIRST AID KIT:

Items include:

  1. Band-aids
  2. Antibiotic ointment
  3. Advil
  4. Gas X {dorm food makes this one essential}
  5. Benadryl
  6. Milk of magnesia
  7. Thermometer
  8. Instant ice pack
  9. Pepto
  10. Throat losenges
  11. Cold medicine
  12. Q-Tips
  13. Nail clippers
  14. Hydrogen Peroxide
  15. An ace bandage
  16. Cotton balls
  17. Small pair scissors
  18. Small pair of tweezers
